Japanese toilet buttons: which to press

Step by step

1. 01

   Flush

   Use the 大 (big) / 小 (small) buttons, or a lever on the wall or tank (often labeled 流す). Some flush automatically.

2. 02

   Bidet (washlet)

   「おしり」/「ビデ」wash, 「止」stops it. There are also pressure/position buttons. Not using it at all is completely fine.

3. 03

   Sound button

   The 「音姫」 button only plays a flushing sound (for privacy) — it does not flush.

4. 04

   Paper

   Toilet paper goes straight in the bowl. The small bin is for sanitary items only.
