Shinkansen

Riding the Tokaido Shinkansen

Step by step

  1. 01

    Tickets

You usually need two: a base fare ticket + a limited-express ticket. Buy at a ticket office, a reserved-seat machine, or via the EX app. Tokyo–Shin-Osaka runs Nozomi / Hikari / Kodama.

  2. 02

    Shinkansen gate

It is separate from the local-train gate. Insert both tickets together (stacked) and take them back. EX-app users tap their IC card.

  3. 03

    Platform & your car

Match your car number and train (e.g. "Nozomi 23") on the floor/pillar marks and line up there. Non-reserved cars are usually near cars 1–3 (depends on the train).

  4. 04

    Luggage

Very large suitcases may need a seat with an "oversized baggage area" reservation. Normal-size bags go on the overhead rack or by your feet.

  5. 05

    On board & getting off

Reserved seats are by car number, row number, and seat letter. Take calls in the deck area. An announcement comes before arrival; ekiben (bento) are easiest to buy on the platform before boarding.
