Getting in and out of a taxi in Japan

Step by step

1. 01

   Hail a taxi

   Look for the red 空車 (vacant) light in the window, or wait at a taxi stand and raise your hand.

2. 02

   Get in

   The rear-left door opens by itself. Step back and let it open — do not pull it.

3. 03

   Tell the driver where

   You do not need to speak. Showing the address or place name on your screen is enough.

   Tell the destination

   ここまでお願いします（画面を見せる）

   Koko made onegai shimasu

   To here, please. (show the screen)

4. 04

   Pay and get out

   Card or IC usually works, but some taxis are cash only. Tipping is not expected. The door opens for you again.

   Ask if a card works

   カードは使えますか？

   Kaado wa tsukaemasu ka?

   Can I pay by card?
