Can you eat while walking in Japan?
Step by step
- 01
Read the place
Stalls and food streets are fine. Avoid residential streets, crowded paths, and trains.
- 02
Eat where you bought it
Locals don't really walk-and-eat either. Standing still in front of the shop to eat is the safest.
- 03
Trash
Put trash in the shop's bin, or carry it out. Don't drop it on the street.
- 04
Watch for requests
More tourist areas now post "please refrain from eating while walking" — if you see it, follow it. It's not illegal; the real test is not bothering others with drips, skewers, or crowding.
